Pittsburgh Sunset from the Westend Bridge

Given we are now in the green phase of the COVID-19 response here in PA, I got a little itch to go walk around Downtown on a beautiful Pittsburgh summer Friday evening. I have been thinking for quite some time that I wanted to see the view of the city from the West End Bridge and I thought that I’d give it a whirl around sunset.

After driving around in a circle for a bit, trying to find where to park, I decided to park on the North Shore and simply walk over past the casino and up the steps in the Cardello Parking lot. My first parking attempt was in the Cardello Parking lot, but there were absolutely no other cars there and I was afraid I’d be towed if it is private property. It would have been the perfect parking spot as there are steps to the bridge leading directly to the lot.

Nevertheless, I used the mile or so walk to warm up with the camera for the evening. Not to mention it’s always good to get some extra steps in while taking in the views of the city. I played with some light reflecting off of the Science Center, and Heinz Field, on my way past the Casino.

You can see the sun setting past the bridges and overpasses looking West away from the city. I thought some of the silhouettes were cool and grabbed a few shots looking towards the highways and roads. I liked the yellow and red hues the sky was already forming in that direction. Traffic lights and overpasses don’t usually make for a pretty foreground, but the sky was cool.

As I made my way up to the bridge and climbed the steps, I found a few cool views of the casino and the reflection of the sunset behind it. The sky was lit up with some pinks, blues, and reds by this point of the evening.

Once on the bridge, again looking West, I was overwhelmed with the bright red sights of the sun setting behind the horizon. The western sky was far prettier than the sky looking east over the city. I was able to capture a little pink and red in the sky above the city, but it wasn’t nearly as spectacular as looking downriver.

Appreciating the architecture of the bridge, I was able to get a few nice shots of the sky above the trusses and suspension cables. It makes for an interesting silhouette as well.

Once I set up the tripod, facing the city, I probably took a few too many just trying to capture something interesting as the sun continued to set. Most of the pictures look pretty close to the same, progressively getting darker which adds a little differentiation between the pictures.

I also decided I’d play with some of the video capabilities of my camera, so I created a time-lapse video of the city skyline as night fell. I only had the patience to let it do its thing for about 10 minutes, to create the above 4-second clip; but it’s a start.

Finally, I captured some cool night shots of the city from this vantage point with the buildings lit up for both Juneteenth and Pride. I really like how the city’s buildings light up in all different colors now depending on the holiday/event.

I’ll definitely want to try this vantage point again from sunrise, as I imagine the sunrise behind the city is quite spectacular. For now, I hope everyone enjoyed this beautiful, relatively uneventful, Friday evening with me. Happy Pride.
